Here are some of my more successful sketches from Asbury Park’s Dr. Sketchy’s session. The gorgeous models were Tricia Pain and Krissi Horan. The theme was Soviet Takeover. Beautiful costumes, and lots of red!

Nothing to see here, just me and my giant Ham-bot.
When it rains, it pours. Not only do I have two separate gallery openings this Friday night, but today my work was featured in Shop Art Direct and Glamour Shoes. Look at me go!

I’ve just returned from New York city. Already, I miss it.
Up until now, my paintings of the Occupy Wall Street movement have been from photographs. It is not very fulfilling to paint from photographs. I went to New York so I could paint from life. And I painted a lot.
#OWS. Watercolor and ink on paper. 6″ x 7″.
It was shocking how many people at the demonstration were not protesting. It seemed there were more journalists and people taking pictures then there were occupiers. That was a common theme in New York. New Yorkers seems to prefer recording and observing life more than participating. The following sketch is of the back of a CNN reporter. Her lights were bright, and her cameras never stopped running.
It was tough to get a good painting spot in the hectic, protesting park. There were marches and performance art, reporters and giant puppets. The landscape was ever changing. The people occupying Wall Street were constantly cleaning. They moved tents to scrub the sidewalk. There was a whole crew of people in masks that did nothing but wander the park and sweep. When I was there, the square smelled more like Pine-Sol than a corner of New York.
The last painting I completed of those standing for the 99% is a little more abstract than my usual watercolors. I wanted to capture the constant motion, the idea that there is something happening here.
What It Is. Watercolor and ink on paper. 6″ x 5.5″.

Like most creative people, sometimes I struggle with artist’s block. Group assignments are a great way to fight this not so serious ailment. The following works took no longer than forty five minutes to create. They are in response to specific themes assigned daily by Reddit’s Sketch Daily Club.
Painting of my favorite word: Sparrow
Drawing of my favorite villain: Samara
They aren’t masterpieces, just fun little exercises. Sometimes, it’s nice to make art without serious intentions.

This month’s Dr. Sketchy’s Philly session was exceptionally fun. The model, D’Arcy D’Lux, really knew how to put on a show.

I used to be a regular at Dr. Sketchy’s Philadelphia. Since my 2009 move, I have been slacking in my duties as an art monkey. Yesterday, I attended my first Dr. Sketchy’s South Jersey. It was held at the Artist’s Consortium in Millville. Our model was the bold and beautiful Chi Chi Rodriguez. It was an honor to work with Chi Chi, as she will be competing in Atlantic City’s upcoming Miss’d America Pageant.

Thanksgiving is fast approaching, and somehow I have not managed to update my blog yet this month. I am sorry. Here is a page from my sketchbook to break my artistic silence.
Featured above is my purse, a stapler, and a calculator depicted in pen, marker, and colored pencil. Sketchbook Saturday lives!
Also, I’ve recently revamped my Etsy shop for the upcoming holiday season. For the first time I am selling prints of my plein air paintings. Take a look.

It is hard to describe a trip to Waikiki without mentioning the shopping district. From ABC‘s to shopping malls, downtown Honolulu is covered in stores. Below is a painting of a shave ice stand tucked away in an alley by the beach.
The International Market is a bustling collection of cart vendors, street performers, and outdoor shops. Tropical plants combined with the perpetually perfect Hawaiian weather make the whole set up beautiful. Please click to enlarge the following image as I don’t think the thumbnail does it justice.
Women’s fashion on the island can be summed by sun dresses and swim suits.
Where there is retail there are food courts. This Tiki Burger hut was charming.
This cat resides at my favorite restaurant on Oahu, Ramen Nakamura.

Here are some sketches of animals I made at the Honolulu Zoo.
I was lucky enough to catch the elephants at their happiest, bath time.
The flamingoes in Hawaii are more orangey pink than the reddish pink I am used to seeing.
The turtles, lemurs, and gibbons shared a living space.
These hippoes were quite fond of one another.
The tigers were beyond gorgeous, but moved around the most, making drawing difficult.
Giraffes, zebra, and a rhino.
Before my trip to this zoo I did not know what a gharial was. Now I do and I sort of wish I didn’t. They are absolutely horrifying. Fun to draw, but horrifying.
I was so absorbed with the gharial section that I drew the trees around it.
