Bittersweet

August is a bittersweet month for me. My love of summer is comparable only to the affection the average 7 year old has for Christmas. As I try to cling to the last days of plein air painting and sun kissed skin, it seems the rest of the world has moved on to autumn. My Pinterest feed is filling with fall fashion tips while Twitter babbles about back to school. Facebook friends long for a release from “this heat.” August is the last full month of summer, and I tend to spend it longing for June.

The following painting is of The Pink Mermaid, an antique shop on Asbury Avenue in Ocean City. Unfortunately, I know it is one of the last plein air works I’ll have time to create before the season changes.

Wet and Wild. Watercolor and ink on paper. 5″ x 7″.

Shore View

It pains me to admit that the summer is almost gone. Next week will be the last Evenings Along Asbury of 2011. It’s been a beautiful year for plein air painting. This week’s work:

Asbury Avenue. Watercolor and ink on paper. 6″ x 4.5″.

Unframed: $150.00

Corner Store

Below is last night’s weekly Ocean City painting.

Store Down the Shore

This watercolor painting of a Jersey shore store front won first place in the July 6th Ocean City Paint Out. Shop windows in vacation towns are always eye catching. Something about that orange dress demanded to be painted.

Down the Shore Store. Watercolor and Ink on paper. 7″ x 6″ (17.8 cm x 15.2 cm).

Feel free to join me at next Wednesday’s Evenings Along Asbury plein air painting event.

Evenings Along Asbury

Last night was the first Evenings Along Asbury of the summer. Besides great community events, every Wednesday throughout the summer there is a plein air event in Ocean City. Through this paint out I have met fantastic local artists like Ryan Simmons, Chuck Law, and Martini.

As an artist, most of what I create is done in solitude. Evenings Along Asbury gives me a chance to work adjacent to other painters for an entire season. Needless to say, I look forward to it all year. It is refreshing to see the downtown come together for the sake of the arts.

The following piece was painted last night between 5 and 7:30 pm. It won third place in the first Ocean City Fine Arts paint out of 2011.

Sunset. Watercolor and Ink on paper. 7″ x 6″ (17.8 cm x 15.2 cm).

Unframed: $200.00

A Window and Strings

As I’ve mentioned, this summer I’m participating in dowtown Ocean City’s weekly painting event. Last week, it looked like rain. I asked Grass Roots Music if I could paint the interior of thier Asbury Avenue store. Not only did the owner say yes, but I was introduced to the many talented people who work and hang out there. I hope the  resulting painting captures the welcoming atmosphere of the guitar shop.

Across the Street

Asbury Avenue in Ocean City NJ has an out door painting competition every Wednesday of the summer.  This past Wednesday I won second place with this painting. The painting was a particular challenge as I chose to sit across the street from the buildings I painted. Large vehicles kept parking in front of my subject matter. I learned a valuable lesson about vantage point.
