Over the past few years, my biggest growth as an artist has come from the understanding that not every painting needs to be my best work of art. Not every sketch needs to have a deeper meaning. Sometimes a painting is just a painting. This understanding has helped me paint every day, even when not inspired. Through painting every day I have found beauty in the mundane. I have artistic confidence in every corner.

It has been a long time since I took the time to paint my loved kitty, Samara. Observing her sitting on an unsorted pile of junk mail inspired me to paint these two watercolor sketches. After all, it was a really good excuse for putting off sorting those bills and advertisements just a bit longer.

Last night, I attended my last college party ever. One of my closest friends just graduated. This marks the end of an era. To commemorate the occasion, I painted a picture of the table on which I’ve played countless games of Kings, War, Bull, Clever Endeavor, the Drawing Game, and other drinking favorites.
It was a fun time, but, you know what? I’m happy to end that chapter of my life. I was never very good at beer pong.

This drawing is being posted as a distraction from the fact that I haven’t updated in almost a month. It is not that I have not been making art. I have been painting every day. I’ve been painting so much that updating my blog has not been a priority. Soon, within a week or two, I will be posting pictures of the largest painting I’ve ever created. It is a sixty foot mural, and it is almost complete. Until then, here is an ink drawing of a kitchen stove.

I am very proud to announce I won the 2010 Cumberland County Cultural Heritage Plein Air Painting Contest. The awards ceremony will be at Gallery 50 in Bridgeton from 6-8 this Friday. The paintings I did for the competition have not yet been posted to this blog as they were dropped off immediately after painted. I will get them back in late September for your viewing pleasure.
Also, my painting “Product Placement” won Best in Show at The Hammonton Art Center‘s yearly Works on Paper exhibit. The reception for the exhibit will be tomorrow evening, 5-8 pm at the HAC.
I am very grateful for and proud of these honors.

As I’ve mentioned, this summer I’m participating in dowtown Ocean City’s weekly painting event. Last week, it looked like rain. I asked Grass Roots Music if I could paint the interior of thier Asbury Avenue store. Not only did the owner say yes, but I was introduced to the many talented people who work and hang out there. I hope the resulting painting captures the welcoming atmosphere of the guitar shop.

The Noyes Museum’s art creation club, The Drawing Room, now meets on Tuesday nights instead of Wednesdays. I am still focusing on combining pen and watercolor in an elegantly balanced fashion. Each week I get closer to my goal.
