Playing Catch Up

I’ve been in the wonderful habit of painting more than posting. Here’s a watercolor from a few weeks ago. My reference can be found in this /r/redditgetsdrawn thread.

Keeping Up with the Basics

It’s important to practice figure drawing once in a while, just to stay fresh. Since models aren’t always easy to find or afford, sites like this are fantastic to help artists keep in practice. I spent a couple hours creating gesture drawings today. Since the point was to study anatomy, not make a pretty picture, many of the drawings aren’t worth sharing. Here are a few that came out all right.

Under the Apple Tree

Last night Asbury Park presented a special USO Pin Ups Dr. Sketchy’s. All profits went to the Wounded Warrior Project. The turn out was wonderful. Our glorious models were Victoria Belmont, Missy Heather, Rachel Bufano, Sammi Macabre Macabe, Carolyn Anne, Kristin Brad Wilson, and Tiffany Loretta. There was a special performance by Linda Zadzielski – Van Wagner.

The Jersey Shore

Last night’s Dr. Sketchy’s Asbury Park was fantastic. The models were Krissi Horan, Sammi Macabre McCabe, and Courtney Wood. The session was vintage Jersey shore themed.

As always, click to enlarge images.

Summer in Asbury Park

Went to another Asbury Park session of Dr. Sketchy’s. Their branch is the most active I’ve encountered, averaging two events a month. Being by the Jersey shore on Memorial Day weekend feels good, overall it was an awesome day. Our skilled models were Luna Chase, Sabrina Combs, and Ryan Giampietro. The theme was Frank Frazetta.

As always, click to enlarge the images.

Beauties of Asbury Lanes

A few weeks late, but better than never. Here are the paintings I created at the most recent Dr. Sketchy Asbury Park session. The theme was vampires. The models were Tricia Pain, Krissi, and the sultry Sammi Macabe.

Beautiful Strangers

As my loyal blog follower, you have surely noticed my works’ subject matter has shifted from places to people. This shift has not been easy. I strongly dislike working from photographs, but cannot afford to hire private models. So many of my people paintings have been painted secretly, on trains, at open mics, and in crowded bowling allies.

If I perceive the stranger depicted isn’t paying attention to me (the weirdo with her paints out in public), I will create one of these quick portraits.  I do not know these women. They do not know me.

Despite not know these anonymous women, I think the portraits capture a lot of personality. The colors chosen show if the stranger is warmly approachable or distantly cold. Their expressions give a glimpse into their inner characters.

I hope to keep painting portraits. My goal is to soon hire a beautiful stranger to model so I may flesh out one of these wet sketch into a completed piece.

Dr. Sketchy’s at Blick Art Supplies

Here are some of my watercolors from last night’s Dr. Sketchy’s session at Blick in Philadelphia. The theme was cheesecake pin ups. Our stunning models were Samantha SamSam and Victoria. I adore painting women with red hair.

Dr. Sketchy’s Asbury Park

Here are some of my more successful sketches from Asbury Park’s Dr. Sketchy’s session. The gorgeous models were Tricia Pain and Krissi Horan. The theme was Soviet Takeover. Beautiful costumes, and lots of red!
